1. Caliche probe, soil test and grass selection
We measure the yard, count sun hours, and drive a probe in several spots to find out where the caliche shelf sits. A soil sample goes to a lab for pH, free lime and sodium. Full sun and traffic get TifTuf Bermuda, shade and clay get Raleigh St. Augustine, low-water yards get buffalograss, and salty ground gets paspalum. You get a firm number, not a range.
2. Strip the old lawn, cut the hardpan, set the grade
The old grass and weed mat come out with a sod cutter and get hauled off. Where caliche sits shallow we rip or excavate it rather than laying sod on a shelf, then set fall away from the slab at roughly a quarter inch per foot so the yard drains during a real storm instead of ponding for two days.
3. Amend, install and roll
Compost and sand get tilled into the top four inches, with gypsum where the sodium number calls for it rather than by reflex. How much does sod installation cost in Laredo?

What is caliche and why does it matter for my lawn?
Caliche is a cemented calcium carbonate hardpan, and across much of Laredo it sits anywhere from a few inches to a couple of feet down. Roots stop when they hit it, and water stops with them, so a yard with shallow caliche stays soggy for days after a storm and then bakes dry a week later.
Laying sod straight over it is the most common reason a new Laredo lawn looks fine in April and thin by July. We find it with a probe and either rip it, excavate it, or design the drainage around it.
Can you install sod in the summer in Laredo?
Yes, and warm-season grass actually roots fastest in warm soil. The catch is water. A July install in triple-digit heat needs three light cycles a day for the first ten days, and if your system has a dry zone we would rather find it before the pallets arrive than after. If you cannot commit to that watering, wait for October — we would rather tell you that than sell you a lawn that dies in three weeks.
Why does my lawn turn yellow even though I fertilize it?
That is usually iron chlorosis, not a fertilizer shortage. Laredo soils are alkaline and high in free lime, and above about pH 8.0 the iron already in the soil is chemically locked up and unavailable to the plant, so the leaf goes pale between the veins while the veins stay green.
Chelated iron greens it up for a few weeks and treats the symptom forever. Amending the bed properly at install, and choosing a cultivar that tolerates high pH, treats the cause once.
